History:

Taekwondo is more than an art or combat sport; it is a philosophy. It gives its practitioners physical, mental, and spiritual growth.

Tae Kwon Do literally translates into “The Way of the Hand and Foot”

It is a Korean martial art developed by General Choi Hong Hi and became the national sport of Korea in 1955.  Taekwondo is the result of the blending of traditional Japanese Karate and the ancient Korean foot fighting art Tae Kyon.

Basics:

Taekwondo teaches the practitioner to use hand strikes, foot strikes or kicks and defensive blocks.  As the student moves up in rank, these strikes become more complex and difficult.  These strikes and blocks are learned and reinforced thru the practice of Forms.

Forms:

Forms are a sequence of attacks and blocks. In Taekwondo there is only one correct way to do each movement because each movement has a purpose. It is helpful to know what each move was designed for. Forms are practiced to help the student learn balance and technique while also teaching combinations and where to apply them. They also help to develop the five elements of power.  Hips, Stance, Focus, Reaction Force & Speed

There are different forms for each rank. These forms get progressively harder as the student moves up in rank. They also teach different techniques, which are learned at each belt level.
